The New Atlético Madrid: the post Griezmann Era
In the last seasons, the offensive reference and organiser of Atlético Madrid squad was Antoine Griezmann but, since the last summer, increasing rumours surrounded the player, saying he is now more interested in winning or at least compiting for the next years titles like LaLiga or the Champions League. So he is not going to be the offensive reference of the team anymore. Instead, the purchase the portuguese peospect Joao Félix, with an exorbitated price of 120 million €.
This is a drastic change, implying changes in the structure of the game (Simeone now has to decide if the 2 strikers he usually display are Costa-Morata or Costa-Félix). But this is not all. The veteran defenders of the team, Godín, Juanfran and Filipe Luis, all of them over 30yo, and all of the important to maintain what in LaLiga is commonly know as "the wall of Simeone" in the last years. Since Simeone is the coach of the Atlético, the team was the one who conceed less goals in LaLiga in 5 of the last 6 seasons. Now, that veteran fullbacks and centreback are leaving the club for free. They have to rebuild their defense to continue with the idea of Simeone, with the philosophy they have as a club. Also, the young talent Lucas Hernández is officially confirmed for Bayern with a transfer fee between 70 and 80 million €. The rumours are around young players like Mario Hermoso.
The midfield is also in danger. Rodrigo, the young "6" that made Simeone's job easier this season, is probably leaving for his 80 million € release clause, while Thomas Partey, a defensive midfielder who claimed for more minutes in Atlético with brilliant plays in the African Cup, has a release clause of 50 millions €. And two of the most important players for Atlético in the last years, Saúl and Koke, may be purchased by big european clubs, probably from the Premier League. To ensure this side of the field is competitive, they're negotiating with Héctor Herrera, former player for Oporto.
By now the only thing confirmed is that Atlético Madrid is going to pass through a deep reconstruction.
